The Italian imprint in the Lincoln Memorial
In 1922, Neapolitan immigrant and Bronx resident Attilio Piccirilli – with the help of his five brothers – completed the statue of President Abraham Lincoln to be placed in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. Started in 1911, it is 19 feet high and carved out of 28 blocks of marble. The statue made the Piccirilli brothers very famous; so much so that shortly af- ter they were commissioned, among others, the two famous lions on the steps of the New York Public Library as well as the façade of the Brooklyn Museum.
